Introducing the Jupiter Discovery AFM
Next-Generation Performance for Everyone
Oxford Instruments introduces the Jupiter Discovery Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) to deliver best-in-class performance and exceptional ease of use. This versatile, large-sample AFM ensures that scientists in both academia and industry can attain the higher resolution, repeatability, and throughput they require while empowering even users with minimal training to achieve their research goals.

Jupiter Discovery offers the highest resolution imaging of any large-sample AFM, with a noise floor of less than 25 picometers. A unique design featuring an ultra-rigid granite bridge and proprietary ultra-low-noise LVDT position sensors enable it to consistently and easily achieve molecular and even atomic resolution. It also has higher electronic and mechanical bandwidth for scan rates 5-20x faster than other large-sample AFMs, which facilitates higher productivity and supports innovative new ways of using AFM.
The Jupiter Discovery streamlines AFM setup for both novice and experienced users. It features innovations in convenience such as pre-mounted probes that can be exchanged by hand and one-click motorized laser alignment. A unique side-view camera complements the system’s high-resolution top-view optics in quickly locating regions of interest. These developments help users to get started quickly.
The Jupiter Discovery’s benchmark performance is easily accessible through its Ergo operating software, which guides the user’s workflow to accelerate both routine analyses and advanced measurements. The new FFM-Topography mode with AutoPilot automates high-quality imaging, making it as simple as selecting a scan size and initiating the scan. This is especially beneficial in settings such as core imaging facilities where less experienced users often use AFM to characterize sample topography and roughness.
“We take great pride in enabling our customers’ most ambitious research goals,” said Ben Ohler, senior product line manager for Oxford Instruments AFM systems. “Our AFMs have long been regarded as the most advanced in the market. With the Jupiter Discovery, all that capability is accessible to a much wider range of researchers and budgets.”
The unmatched versatility of the Jupiter Discovery lets it adapt to the challenges of dynamic multidisciplinary research. A vast selection of accessories and capabilities is available including blueDrive photothermal excitation, sample heating and cooling, support for imaging in liquids, and accessories for characterizing materials under high-voltage fields, tensile strain, and even magnetic fields. This adaptability also helps the Jupiter Discovery span a wider range of budgets, enabling lower-priced configurations while still supporting future upgrades.
The Jupiter Discovery provides outstanding productivity and versatility across diverse scientific fields. Its exceptional performance and advanced capabilities enable novel research, while its intuitive features make stunning results accessible to everyone.
