Session 1: Hands-On Practical Optical Spectroscopy
Speaker: Adam Wise, PhD – Technical Sales Specialist
Tuesday, October 7th | 7:00 AM
Workshop Description: A whirlwind tour through the history, physics and practical applications of optical spectroscopy in the lab - starting with Isaac Newton and ending with building your own LEGO spectrometer for a hands-on demonstration of the grating equation.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand a timeline of the history of optical spectroscopy
- See how physical concepts (refraction, diffraction, geometrical optics) drive different optical spectroscopy instrumentation
- Build your own simple lego spectrometer and use the grating equation to solve some simple problems, understand the effects of grating groove density, diffraction order, etc
- Understand how spectrometer geometry drives spectral resolution, throughput, bandwidth etc, and why these matter for measurements
- How to choose the right tool for different spectroscopic “jobs”

Session 2: Innovation in Raman Imaging – Expand Your Capabilities in Every Direction
Speaker: Sabrina Hakelberg – Product Manager
Wednesday, October 8th | 7:00 AM
Workshop Description: Confocal Raman imaging microscopy is an indispensable multi-tool for research and development. Its non-destructive, label-free, and molecularly specific analysis provides detailed structural and chemical insight.
This workshop will explore the principles and analytical potential of the very latest confocal Raman imaging microscope technologies. We will demonstrate how new standards have been set in terms of throughput and broadband performance, while preserving high spectral and spatial resolution, speed, sensitivity and polarization analysis in any direction. These innovations empower researchers to adapt instrumentation to evolving experimental challenges and diverse sample types while ensuring exceptional data quality.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the core principles of confocal Raman imaging and its role in chemical analysis and research & development
- Learn how to achieve high-resolution, non-destructive 2D and 3D Raman imaging results for advanced materials characterization
- Discover strategies to maximize throughput and spectral range without compromising, speed, resolution and sensitivity
- Explore the benefits of automation and remote operation for efficient workflows and measurements in controlled environments
- Be introduced to the possibilities of correlative, complementary analyses
- See application examples from a wide range of fields
