Speckle and Lucky Imaging

Related to: Astronomy

Speckle Imaging is a collective term for several techniques which use large numbers of images to effectively Freeze the variations caused by atmospheric turbulence. Shift and add techniques such as lucky Imaging as well as speckle interferometry can improve imaging resolution well beyond the practical limits set by atmospheric imaging. These techniques not only sharpen images giving a better understanding of familiar objects like planets, nebula and galaxies, but they also enable detection of otherwise non-observable objects such as binary stars.
