Microstat®He, Rectangular Tail cryostat for microscopy

MicrostatHe Rectangular Tail

A helium cooled, vacuum loading continuous flow cryostat for measurements requiring:

  • Small working distance
  • 2.2 - 500K temperature range
  • Optical access in two orthogonal directions
  • Integration into an electromagnet
  • Operation in any orientation

The tails of the Microstat®He Rectangular tail,  MicrostatHe® and Optistat®CF-V are interchangeable giving access to multiple experiments at a limited cost.

The MicrostatHe Rectangular Tail cryostat finds widespread use for Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect, Faraday and other magneto-optical measurements.

Operation

The Microstat®He Rectangular Tail works on a continuous flow principle using an oil-free pump to draw liquid helium from a storage vessel along a transfer tube to the Microstat heat exchanger. Temperature control is achieved by a combination of manual helium flow control and power dissipated in an electrical heater, regulated using a temperature controller.
The cryostat can also be used in "push mode", in that case the flow of liquid helium is generated by pressurising the storage dewar. The advantage is that the need for a gas flow pump is removed thus saving cost and eliminating the noise and vibration generated by the pump.

The Microstat®He will also operate with liquid nitrogen as coolant for measurements to 80K.

Options

  • Windows:
As a standard, the tail has four optical access ports  system, fitted with Spectrosil B windows.  However a wide range of other window materials is available on request
  • Pump options. A simple oil-free vane pump GF4 is supplied for operation to 3.2K. Lower temperatures (to 2.2K) require a single stage rotary pump (EPS40)
  • Temperature controller. Choose either a benchtop, single channel ITC601 or the more flexible single or 3 channel ITC503 (rack mounted)
  • Transfer tubes: All systems are supplied with a low loss transfer tube (LLT600 or LLT 700) for minimum helium consumption (less than  0.45L/hr at 4.2K!) . Note: an Automated  needle valve can be fitted to the LLT to allow automation of the helium flow regulation and optimisation of the  helium consumption
