Tip 9

To determine the area percentage of different phases in your sample

What is the area% of your phase?

Area Measurement Tool

The Area Measurements tool in INCA makes it quick and easy to calculate the percentage area of different phases in your site of interest and to illustrate these phases on an image. This tool works effectively on any image where there is sufficient contrast to separate out the different phases. The example below is a geological specimen, where the different phases show atomic number contrast in the BSE image. Alternatively, an SE image or an X-ray map can be used to identify the phases.

This tool is available on the Site of Interest window.

4.

Tick the check box, and use the slider and histogram to select grey level phases in your sample.

The area percentage for each selected phase is given.

5.

Up to 6 phases can be selected. The percentage area for each phase is plotted on a histogram, and is displayed on the electron image. This data can be reported on a dedicated report template.

Close the window and this image will be saved in the data tree.

6.

If the original data included SmartMap data then the chemistry of each phase can be determined by using the spectrum reconstruction tool in Point & ID.
